Brief Introduction

With the emergence of new IP-based telecoms services including 3G, IPTV, triple-play, VoIP and IP SAN and the continual growth of data service, the capacity of metro transport network is becoming the bottleneck of service development.Facing nearly exhausted bandwidth, a gigantic challenge posed to operators is that which techniques can provide required bandwidth and intelligent grooming of large granularity services, while taking into account multi-service access and aggregation capacity, high integration, low cost and other requirements.

Traditional WDM transport platform can support huge transmission capacity, long transmission distance, strong service access and aggregation capabilities and carrier-class protection mechanisms, but still lacking intelligent scheduling capability and suffering high cost.In order to meet the above network development trends and customer demand, ZTE launched a new generation iOTN product – ZXMP M720 featured large capacity, high integration, low cost, intelligent and eco-friendly.This product is mainly located in the metro edge and aggregation layers, and metro core layers with small capacity, providing customers with a powerful new generation of iOTN solution.ZXMP M720 Cabinet and sub-rack are illustrated in Figure 1.



Features

High Integration

ZXMP M720 is a highly integrated compact iOTN product.Most of the cards are only half height of traditional WDM equipments.Sub-rack height is 6RU and a single rack can support six sub-racks, which can effectively save room space and power consumption, thus significantly reducing operating and maintenance costs and adapting to the requirement for green network.

Large Capacity and Smooth Upgrade

ZXMP M720 can be configured to support at most 40 channels compliant with ITU-T standard.Single channel supports 2.5Gbit/s or 10Gbit/s rate.ZXMP M720 also supports modular upgrade to 32 channel systems with a unit of 4 or 8.

Strong Transmission Capability

ZXMP M720 can be configured as 40-wavelength service transmission systems that conform to specifications of international standard and ITU-T. A single wavelength supports rates of 2.5Gbit/s, 10Gbit/s.

Its large transmission capacity can fully meet the bandwidth requirement of metro edge network, and its modular upgrade mode ensures low investment at the early stage of network establishment and subsequent smooth capacity expansion, which can help ease the financial pressure of network establishment.

Multiple Service Access and Aggregation

Service access: ZXMP M720 can access a variety of services, including STM-N (N = 1, 4, 16, 64), POS (Packet Over SDH), ATM (asynchronous transfer mode), GE, 10 GE, FC, ESCON, FICON, DVB and etc.

Intelligent Traffic Grooming

ZXMP M720 provides an intelligent three-layer traffic grooming hierarchy through GMPLS control plane combined with WB (wavelength blocking), PLC (planar light-wave circuit) and WSS (wavelength selective switching) ROADM techniques, DSS (Distributed Service Switching platform), and L2 switching.

ROADM can support flexible wavelength scheduling capability in 2~10 dimension.DSS can provide non-blocking cross-connection between four slots within one group and the switching capacity is 80G.The switching granularity of DSS is ODU0.L2 switching platform can support multiple GE and 10GE converged to 10GE, and thus effectively improves transport efficiency.

DWDM/CWDM hybrid

ZXMP M720 supports DWDM/CWDM hybrid techniques.Users can initially build DWDM or CWDM network according to actual needs, and later expand the network to DWDM/hybrid mode.ZXMP M720 also can achieve CWDM/DWDM co-transmission within one fiber.DWDM/CWDM hybrid techniques can improve the flexibility of the network construction and reduce the number of transponders and intersection nodes, thus effectively saving investment.

Reliable protection

ZXMP M720 provides complete and reliable protection in photonic level, electrical level and equipment level.

Photonic level protection: path shared ring protection, multiplex section shared ring protection, sub-network connection protection (OSNCP), 1+1 multiplex section protection, equipment-side 1:N OTU protection and optical line protection;

Electrical level protection: ODU sub-network connection protection, ODU shared ring protection;

L2 protection: ESR (Ethernet smart ring) protection.

Equipment level protection: 1+1 hot backup for power supply card, control card.

All protective switching time meets the requirement of less than 50ms specified by ITU-T.



Large Capacity Fully Satisfying Service Explosion In Future

ZXMP M720 supports up to 40×10G for DWDM system, 18×2.5G for CWDM system and modular upgrade.Large transmission capacity can fully meet the bandwidth demand of metro network while the modular upgrade scheme guarantees low initial investments and later smooth expansion, and thus ease the financial pressure on network construction.

A single cabinet of ZXMP M720 supports 40 wavelengths, resulting in equipment room space saving and power consumption reduction and greatly lowering operation & maintenance expenses.



Product Architecture

ZXMP M720 is divided into a hardware system and a software system, which are independent of each other.

According to functional modules, ZXMP M720 hardware structure can be divided into service access and convergence system, group Mux/Demux subsystem, OA subsystem, supervision subsystem, protection subsystem, optical-layer management subsystem, cross-connect subsystem and power subsystem.Their composition and roles are as follows:

Service access and convergence system

It consists of optical transponder boards and convergence boards.It supports various functions such as service access, service convergence, FEC coding/decoding, and performance monitoring etc.

Add/Drop Mux/DeMux Subsystem

Add/Drop multiplexing platform implements add/drop and multiplexing of line optical signal wavelength.The equipment can be divided into Fixed Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (FOADM) and Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer(ROADM) based on the fact whether the add/drop wavelength is fixed.

Optical amplifying subsystem

It takes consumption compensation for long-distance transmitted optical signal by optical amplifying.It usually locates behind demultiplexing platform, before multiplexing platform, and at the intermediate position of line transmission.

Supervision subsystem

–It collect, process and report the configuration, alarm and performance information of each platform to the network management system.

–Receive the commands issued by network management system and forward them to the destination card.

–Transmit network management message via designated monitoring optical channel, which supports a rate of 100Mbit/s with a wavelength of 1510 nm.

Protection subsystem

It consists of SOP board, SOPCS board, SOPMS board, and OMCP board.It supports 1+1 protection and 1:N shared protection for channel and multiplex section.

Power supply subsystem

It consists of SPWB and SFAN boards.It provides the system with power supply and fan.

ZXMP M720 software structure consists of board software, Agent and NM software, which run in boards, SNP and NM computers respectively to manage and control boards, NEs and entire network.ZXMP M720 software structure adopts the hierarchical design principle and each layer fulfills its functions and offers services for upper layer.
